Social Media Policy

Guidelines for functioning in an electronic world are the same as those for the physical world.  The same values, ethics and policies (code of conduct, security, confidentiality, etc.) apply to the electronic world as apply in the physical world. When online, just like when in the physical world, use sound judgment and common sense, and adhere to VTS’s or your employer’s values, applicable policies, and the law.  While online, and more specifically while participating in social media, here are things you should do as well as things you may not do:

What You Should Do:

  • Disclose your Affiliation:When discussing work related matters that are within your area of job responsibility, you must disclose affiliation with VTS or your employer.
  • State That It’s YOUR Opinion:Unless authorized to speak on behalf of VTS or your employer, you must state that the views expressed are your own. 
  • Protect Yourself:Be careful about what personal information you share online.
  • Act responsibly and ethically:When participating in online communities, do not misrepresent yourself. If you are not a vice president, do not say you are.  Do not state things as fact when they are not.
  • Respect your audience. Do not use ethnic or racial slurs, derogatory comments, personal insults, or obscenity.
  • Think about consequences. Think before you type. Read and re-read what you type before your hit “submit.”

What You May Not Do:

  • The Numbers:Do not disclose non-public financial or operational information. This includes strategies, forecasts, and pricing.
  • Personal Information:Never share personal information about someone else, including a co-worker, a customer, or any other third party.
  • Confidential and Trade Secret Information:Do not publish, post, or release information that is considered non-public, proprietary business information by VTS, your employer, your customer, or any other third party.
  • Work Related Legal Matters: Do not comment on work-related legal matters, (i.e. company lawsuits, EEOC complaints, etc.) unless you are an official spokesperson.
  • Breaching Policies and Breaking The Law: You must comply with all applicable company policies (like code of conduct and confidentiality) and laws (like anti-discrimination laws).
